FAQs

  • As a grief coach, I provide guidance, spiritual reflection, and practical grief activities to help clients move forward in their lives while honoring the eternal memory of their loved ones. During an 8-week grief coaching session, we focus on assessing present challenges and articulating future hopes.

Grief coaching is less open-ended than grief therapy; it is limited to a certain period of time (8 weeks) and is more focused and limited in terms of scope. If you are not sure if it’s right for you, book a free consultation and let’s discuss it!

I have a Master of Divinity degree from Harvard Divinity School and a Doctor of Ministry degree from St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary. I am Board Certified as a Advanced Practice Chaplain (Palliative Care and Hospice). As such, I do not bill insurance companies or make a medical diagnosis. Instead, I utilize my education and extensive professional experience to guide my work.

  • No! All are welcome. I have companioned patients and families of all faiths and no particular faith tradition over my 20+ years of experience as a Palliative Care Chaplain and Bereavement Coordinator. For grief coaching, I draw on the rich tradition of Orthodox Christian faith to strengthen and inform the process of grief, bereavement, and healing. I also utilize modern psychological theory, trauma-informed care modalities, and bereavement frameworks when appropriate. People of all faiths are most welcome to work with me, with the understanding that we are primarily utilizing an Orthodox Christian theological framework to process grief.

  • I offer 8-week coaching session of coaching to mirror the journey contained in my book, “Memory Eternal: Living with Grief as Orthodox Christians.” I will guide you in one-on-one reflection, discernment, and prayerful engagement of the many “tools” we have to cope with grief, including spiritual reflection, liturgy, journaling, grief exercises, and more. You may find that one 8-week session is sufficient, or you may elect to do another grief coaching session right away. This is about what you need and what works best for you!

  • I offer a complimentary introductory 20-minute session to explore a client’s goals.

The 8-week coaching session is $90 per 55-minute session.

I recognize cost can be an issue. I’m also aware that people spend money on lots of things without giving it a second thought: massages - getting your nails done - a fancy dinner - tickets to events - makeup - and beyond. Sometimes it is a better idea to spend this $ on your self-care!

  • I periodically offer reduced fee sessions for those who are in need. Consider requesting a reduced fee session if you have significant debt, have medical expenses not covered by insurance, receive public assistance, have immigration-related expenses, are an elder with limited financial support, are an unpaid caregiver, or are a returning citizen who has been denied work due to incarceration history.

Consider paying the standard fee if you own the home you live in, have investments, retirement accounts, or inherited money, travel recreationally, have access to family money and resources in times of need, work part time by choice, or have a relatively high degree of earning power.

The scale is intended to be a map, inviting each of us to take inventory of our financial resources and look deeper at our levels of privilege and our stewardship.

If you are interested in accessing a reduced-fee session, please email me directly at martelliorthodox@gmail.com.
